Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1/4 cup Hoisin Sauce Sweet base for the glaze; can swap with a mixture of soy sauce and sugar.
  • 2 tablespoons Oyster Sauce Adds umami richness; optional for vegetarian preferences.
  • 2 tablespoons Honey Brings sweetness to balance flavors; maple syrup works as a substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons Dark Soy Sauce Contributes deep color and flavor; regular soy sauce may not deliver the same intensity.
  • 1 tablespoon Rice Wine Enhances the marinade; dry sherry can be used instead.
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Ginger, minced Provides aromatic depth; ground ginger is an alternative.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Cloves, minced Infuses savory notes; garlic powder can substitute.
For the Chicken
  • 1 pound Boneless Chicken Thighs Ensures juiciness; breast can be used with caution.
For Garnish
  • 1/4 cup Scallions, chopped Fresh finishing touch; chives can substitute.
  • 2 tablespoons Sesame Seeds Adds visual flair; can be omitted.

Equipment

  • Medium bowl
  • Ziplock bag
  • skillet or grill pan
  • Cutting Board

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, honey, dark soy sauce, rice wine, minced ginger, and minced garlic until well combined.
  2. Place boneless chicken thighs in a ziplock bag, pour the marinade over, seal the bag, and massage the marinade into the chicken. Marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, ideally up to 4 hours.
  3. Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat until hot. Remove the chicken from the marinade (reserve it for basting) and cook the thighs for about 6-7 minutes on one side until browned. Flip the chicken, baste frequently with the reserved marinade, and cook for another 6-7 minutes.
  4. Once cooked, remove the chicken from heat and let it rest for at least 5 minutes. Slice the chicken into thin strips.
  5. Plate the sliced Char Siu Chicken over a bed of steamed jasmine rice and garnish with scallions and sesame seeds.

Notes

For best results, marinate chicken longer and baste while cooking for enhanced flavor and glaze. Adjust cooking heat to prevent burning the glaze.
