Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, granulated sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Pour in the foamy yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Mix the filling by combining cream cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan, fresh herbs, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes in a medium bowl.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet.
  6. Roll out the risen dough into a rectangular shape, spread the cheese filling, roll tightly into a log, and seal the edges.
  7. Twist the dough and shape it into a loaf or spiral on the baking sheet. Pinch the ends to secure.
  8. Whisk together egg and milk for the wash. Brush over the dough and sprinkle with optional toppings. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm.
