- In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with 1/2 cup of water, stirring gently. Heat over medium-low for 3–5 minutes until the sugar dissolves.
- Remove the pan from heat and add 2 cups of fresh cranberries. Stir gently to coat in syrup and let soak for 5–10 minutes.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer cranberries to a wire rack over a baking sheet and let dry for at least 1 hour.
- Mix the remaining 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with optional orange zest. Toss dried cranberries in the sugar mixture until coated.
