Preparation Steps
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1½ cups of all-purpose flour, ½ cup of sugar, and ¾ cup of cold butter. Mix until it resembles coarse crumbs and press into the bottom of the prepared pan.
- Slice 3–4 cups of firm apples and toss with ¼ cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of nutmeg. Spread over the shortbread crust.
- In another bowl, mix 1 cup of rolled oats, ½ cup of flour, and ½ cup of cold butter. Blend until crumbly; fold in optional nuts. Sprinkle over the apple layer.
- Bake for approximately 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and apples are tender.
- Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing into squares.
