- In a large skillet, melt the 2 tablespoons of salted butter and 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Sauté the onions for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become golden brown and caramelized.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian-style breadcrumbs, milk, egg, French onion soup mix, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in half of the caramelized onions. Mix until just combined.
- Shape the meat mixture into a loaf and transfer it to the greased crockpot.
- Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
- During the last 15 minutes, top the meatloaf with remaining caramelized onions and cheese. Cover to melt.
