Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter with ½ cup of brown sugar over medium heat for 2–3 minutes until bubbly.
  3. Pour the caramel into the cake pan and arrange sliced apples in a circular pattern.
  4. In a large bowl, sift together 1½ cups of flour, 1½ tsp baking powder, ½ tsp baking soda, ½ tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, and ¼ tsp nutmeg.
  5. Cream together ½ cup softened butter and ¼ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Beat in 2 large eggs and 1 tsp vanilla extract, then mix in ½ cup sour cream and ¼ cup milk.
  7. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined, then pour over the apple slices in the pan.
  8. Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool for 10–15 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
