Preparation Steps
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
- In a medium saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter with ½ cup of brown sugar over medium heat for 2–3 minutes until bubbly.
- Pour the caramel into the cake pan and arrange sliced apples in a circular pattern.
- In a large bowl, sift together 1½ cups of flour, 1½ tsp baking powder, ½ tsp baking soda, ½ tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, and ¼ tsp nutmeg.
- Cream together ½ cup softened butter and ¼ cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in 2 large eggs and 1 tsp vanilla extract, then mix in ½ cup sour cream and ¼ cup milk.
- Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined, then pour over the apple slices in the pan.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool for 10–15 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
