Description
A simple and delicious recipe for homemade sandwich bread that is perfect for any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add melted butter, salt, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined.
- Gradually add the remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place it in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- Cover the loaf with a towel and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes until it rises above the edge of the pan.
- Brush the top of the loaf with milk for a golden crust.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a whole wheat version, substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
- Add herbs or spices like rosemary or garlic powder to the dough for extra flavor.
